Roadmap 2050: A Practical Guide to a Prosperous, Low-Carbon Europe
(by McKinsey, KEMA et al, 2010)

The study presents a technical and economic analysis for the power sector in 2050. Three scenarios, with different energy mixes, 40, 60 and 80% renewables, have been analysed. A fourth scenario for 100% renewable power in Europe has also been preliminary assessed.

The study shows that it is technically possible to realise the 4 scenarios and it is economically viable and possibly positive to the economy to have a transition to a largely decarbonised power sector. Even in the 100% scenario, the electricity bill is expected not to have any relevant increase and the macroeconomic impact to be positive.

Key to the realisation of any of the suggested scenarios is the reinforcement and expansion of the European electricity grid. Whatever pathway is adopted, the policies required in the next 10 years are very similar. The study shows for the first time that we need to act now and that we can and should have a no-regret investment strategy for building up the required grid infrastrucuture.

100% Renewable Electricity. A Roadmap to 2050 for Europe and North Africa
(by PwC et al, 2010)

The study by PricewaterhouseCoopers and others suggests a policy roadmap towards a European and North African power system, which is based on 100% renewable energy sources. The study builds on current political developments and available technologies to build the case for political leadership in leading and managing the transition to 2050. Key elements to achieve this is a strong, and coherent political leadership which would bring confidence in the financial markets.

Moreover, the study stresses the need for expanding and upgrading the grid and realise by 2050 a SuperSmart Grid  capable of integrating renewable energy sources wherever and whenever they are generated, both from utility scale and distributed generation units; capable of transmitting electricity  from generation centres  to load and storage sites and enable full scale demand management.
